Should we put babies in sitting position when they are learning to sit?

Updated: Sep 20, 2020

Simple question yet debatable.

Is it good to put babies in sitting positions by supporting them with pillows or cushion? "training them to sit"?

Putting a baby in a sitting position too early can be harmful to its development, and even cause long-term consequences. So what are the best practices to adopt?

Learning to sit is one of the major stages in a child's psychomotor development stage. "In general, babies sit with support when they are able to hold their head well. This occurs around 5 or 6 months.

It is only around the age of 6 or 7 months that a child begins to stand on his own. Until the child is able to find the sitting position on his own, it is best not to sit there because he will not be comfortable.

According to babies psychomotor therapist, a baby who cannot sit up on his own is not actually able to sit properly without artificial support (eg cushions). The nascent musculature of his back does not allow him to support the weight of his head which pulls him forward. In addition, as soon as he comes out of his mother's womb, the baby discovers gravity and his whole nervous system will organize itself to help him not to fall.

In other words, if he does not master the sitting position, baby will suffer from internal micro-tensions related to this fear of falling. This is why healthcare professionals now recommend parents not artificially "train" their child to sit, something they might be tempted to do to fit into the norm.

This learning is supposed to be acquired. In addition, a baby who is stuck in a sitting position will be stressed because he will not be able to show that he is tired.
